About the Department :
The department of Horticulture, Aromatic & Medicinal Plants (HAMP) was established in 2007 with a vision to harness the potential of horticultural crops and medicinal and aromatic plant (MAPs) bio-resources of Mizoram in particular and North Eastern Region (NER) in general. The agroclimate of the region is suitable for organic cultivation of fruits having excellent export potential. One vertical of the department is to develop, improved production and post-harvest technologies for major fruits available in NER. This vertical also includes processing and value addition of underutilized fruits. Another vertical is related to plantation crops, spices and MAPs. The major research focus is on exploration of genetic diversity, domestication and conservation of germplasms of underutilized spices and MAPs. Research is also focused on phytochemical analysis, bioassay guided fractionation and identification of bioactive compounds from MAPs for phytopharmaceutical drug development.
